Group Coaching

In order for us to maintain the highest level of coaching and ensure the best experience for our Little Wheelers, we organise our classes by ability. We are confident that this will aid the development of your child’s cycling and make for a more enjoyable experience.

We will of course be able to offer additional guidance regarding the appropriate group so please do not hesitate to contact us, but below is a basic guide:

A 6-week foundation course designed for non-riders new to Little Wheelers who are using balance bikes or bikes with pedals removed.

*Although not compulsory, we encourage parental involvement at this level.

On graduating from our ‘BALANCE’ level your child will be able to:

  • balance over a minimum of 5 meters and turn safely and effectively with confidence
  • place their helmet on and fasten strap
  • recognise several key components on their bicycle
  • mount, dismount, pick up and place a bike down correctly
  • use brakes to stop

A follow-on 6-week course for cyclists who have graduated from the Little Wheelers BALANCE level (hold certificate Levels 1 or 2) and are ready to start adding pedals to their bike.

*Although not compulsory, we encourage parental involvement at this level.

On graduating from our ‘PEDAL’ level your child will be able to:

  • complete a ‘pedal-ready’ start
  • ride unaided over a minimum of 20m including a 180 degree turn
  • demonstrate the ability to stop in a 2 metre box without skidding

This level is made up of 12-week terms and is designed for children who are riding unaided on pedals without using stabilisers. (Children who have attended previous Little Wheelers courses will have achieved certificate 3 and above)

*We encourage parents to sit back, relax and let the coaches take over at this level.

On graduating from our ‘SKILL’ level your child will be able to:

  • demonstrate the ability to ride in pairs and small groups safely and effectively
  • perform technical handling drills such as track stands, limbo and out-of-saddle slaloms
  • demonstrate good knowledge of bicycle components and their role
  • perform a British Cycling ‘M check’ highlighting potential issues
  • perform moving mounts and dismounts

This level is made up of 12-week terms and is designed to give our young riders all the skills and information they will need to go on to join a cycling club and begin racing. Our young riders will also be given a basic introduction to off-bike strength and conditioning and movement screening. (Riders must be 6+ years of age)

*We encourage parents to sit back, relax and let the coaches take over at this level.

On graduating from our ‘RACE’ level your child will have:

  • the ability to change an inner tube with minimal assistance
  • the knowledge of different cycling disciplines/events and riding/race tactics used
  • a good understanding of basic movement patterns and exercises, what happens to their body when exercising, and how to stay fit and healthy.
